The answer is: A.) the clergy

This quotation can be found in the prologue of "The Canterbury Tales" by Geoffrey Chaucer, it is refer to the clergy, the word gold is use to represent the purity or a higher standard than the ordinary and if it can be defeated or rust what can be expected to happened with the iron that is lower quality of metal.
