-x=-y-10

multiply by -1

-1*(-x)=-1(-y-10)

x = y+10

substitute this into the first equation. everytime you see x put in y+10

x+y=12

(y+10) + y =12

combine like terms

2y+10 =12

subtract 10 from each side

2y+10-10=12-10

2y = 2

divide by 2

2y/2 =2/2

y =1

now we need to find x

x = y+10

x = 1+10

x =11
