Why is having a gun so important in 1789? help

Two reasons.

1. Guns gave early Americans to provide their own meat for their family. A deer, properly cured, could last a family through the winter.

2. The concept of militias was still very much a part of the American fabric. One would be expected to join the militia to protect one's region against any issues.
