The Iroquois Democratic System greatly influenced the Articles of Confederation and the U.S. Constitution. The Iroquois system was based on democratic principles and divided the government into three equal branches: executive, legislative and judicial branches. Checks and balances existed. Leaders were servants of the people. They subjected themselves to the people's will. Moreover, the system included provisions for political representation, freedom of assembly, speech and religion.
