The remainder is how many tourists are not going to fit in the vans
So if 1 van can hold 9 tourists,
Then 15 vans can hold 9x15 tourists, or 135 tourists
Out of 140, 135 will go and 5 will be the remainders,
I hope this helps :)

if 140 tourists are split up 9 per each of 15 vans, 15×9=135 which is the amount of people able to occupy a van. if there is 140 tourists and only 135 can go on a van you do 140-135=5, that means your remainder is 5.
your remainder represents the amount of people unable to board a van.
