Rivers were the earliest form of highways in the Northeast, allowing goods from the interior to be transported to important coastal hubs.

This allowed lumber and pelts from the interior of Canada and Vermont & New Hampshire to access ports like New York and Boston to make it to Europe or to other important ports in the New World. The rivers were the conduit for trade to be moved, allowing the Northeast to grow upon the rising wave of commercial success.
