Mr. Gold had 4 times more cars than motorcycles in his garage. After he bought 4 more cars and sold 4 motorcycles, there were 8 times more cars than motorcycles. How many cars and motorcycles were there in garage?

Explanation:

let

Number of motorcycles = x

He had 4 times more cars than motorcycles,so,Number of cars = 4x

He bought 4 more cars, so equation becomes: 4x+4

And sold 4 motorcycles,so: x-4

now there were 8 times more cars than motorcycles:

so we equate it like this:

8(x-4)=4x+4

solving the above equation:

8x-32=4x+4

4x=36

we find the value of X.

which is: x=9

Now put it in the equation of cars to find out number of cars

the equation was: 4x+4

solving it:

no of cars = 4(9)+4

=36+4

No of cars =40.

Now solving it for motorcycles: x-4

9-4

no of motorcycles = 5
