The Vedas are some of the eldest and most impactful religious texts in the history of India, categorized by them as a source of "divine knowledge".

Interpreting the culture and religion of any civilization is always crucial when trying to understand how both its society and government worked. Historians have gone back to the Vedas time and time as a reliable source to analyse Classical India's civilization as a whole, because of the direct ramifications it had on their political structure, legal guidelines and societal behavior and customs.

Hope this helps!
