Given that an airplane flies 2700 miles from Los Angeles (LA) to NYC.

Now it says that the plane flies back to LA from NYC,

Which is opposite direction of (LA to NYC).

we know that opposite direction is denoted by negative sign.

So Yes, It is flying in negative direction.


Justification using absolute value:

If we consider LA to NYC as positive direction.

then distance traveled from LA to NYC is represented as +2700

Also distance traveled from NYC to LA is represented as -2700

Absolute value of +2700 = |+2700| = 2700

Absolute value of -2700 = |-2700| = 2700

Both are same so that means plane traveled same distance but in opposite direction.
