given the 2 equations

- 5x + 3y = 11 → (1)

x - 2y = 2 → (2)

rearrange (2) expressing x in terms of y by adding 2y to both sides, hence

x = 2 + 2y → (3)

substitute x = 2 + 2y in (1)

- 5(2 + 2y) + 3y = 11

- 10 - 10y + 3y = 11

- 10 - 7y = 11 ( add 10 to both sides )

- 7y = 21 ( divide both sides by - 7 )

y = - 3

substitute y = - 3 in (3) and evaluate for x

x = 2 - 6 = - 4

solution is (- 4, - 3 )
