To find the value of x use the Pythagoras theorem for right angled triangles. (The square on the hypotenuse = sum of the squares on the other 2 sides).

(2x + 1)^2 = (3x - 2)^2 + (x + 1)^2

4x^2 + 4x + 1 = 9x^2 - 12x + 4 + x^2 + 2x + 1

4x^2 - 9x^2 - x^2 + 4x + 12x - 2x + 1 - 4 - 1 = 0

-6x^2 + 14x - 4 = 0

-3x^2 + 7x - 2 = 0

(x - 2)(-3x + 1) = 0

x = 2, 1/3

x = 2 is an answer because it fits the original equation

1/3 is not an answer because that would make the 3x - 2 side = -1 and you cant have a negative side
