Yeats wrote this poem to illustrate the scenario of WWI and to honour a friend of his. He was an Irish aviator. This is the first part of the poem : "I know that I shall meet my fate// Somewhere among the clouds above; // Those that I fight I do not hate // Those that I guard I do not love; // My country is Kiltartan Cross,//My countrymen Kiltartan’s poor, //No likely end could bring them loss //Or leave them happier than before.". The speak knows he will die when he says: " ..meet my fate //...... clouds above." He will die for his country and he is convinced that this has been a good cause : " Those that I fight......"; " Those .....not love." He is beyond what he feels towards people. He has chosen to fight for his country and to free his country from poverty. " My country is......"//; // ......Kiltartan's poor."
