In the novel, Colonel Pyncheon had built a house on the land owned by Matthew Maule. The colonel had gotten Matthew killed on charges of witchcraft and had taken the land, making it his own. On the day of the housewarming party, the colonel was found dead n his armchair. Some legends say that Matthew had put a curse on the Pyncheon family for the witchcraft accusation. Eventually, another member of the Pyncheon family would again die on the same armchair.
