Many Republicans opposed the New Deal as they believed it illegally expanded the Federal Government past what was legally allowed under the Constitution.

The correct answer is expanded the power of the federal government.

At this time, Republicans were in favor of a small federal government. This idea is the complete opposite of FDR's New Deal.

In order to help America escape the Great Depression, FDR implemented an enormous government program that resulted in the creation of different agencies ran by the federal government. These agencies included works programs, unemployment benefits, social security, etc.

Republicans felt this was an overreach of federal power and that this would create in American citizens relying on government to solve all of their problems.
