Final answer:

Malcolm X used the term 'homemade education' to emphasize the importance of self-education and knowledge acquisition outside of the traditional education system.

Step-by-step explanation:

Malcolm X used the term 'homemade education' to emphasize the importance of self-education and knowledge acquisition outside of the traditional education system. He believed that the educational system at the time perpetuated racism and miseducation, particularly towards African Americans, causing them to be ashamed of their history and culture. By advocating for a 'homemade education,' Malcolm X encouraged individuals to take control of their own learning, seek knowledge outside of mainstream sources, and empower themselves through self-education.

First, let's go over who he was.

Malcolm X was a powerful black leader who departed from King's nonviolent strategies of civil disobedience. He was a Black Muslim pastor in the Nation of Islam.

Here is what he means:

He had left a stolen watch in a store for repairs when he was apprehended there in 1946. In February of that year, he started serving an eight- to ten-year term at Charlestown State Prison for theft and breaking and entering; he was released after seven years.

He used the time in prison to increase his knowledge while thinking back on his time in school. He participated in argument on the prison debate team, read practically everything in the prison library that was accessible to him, and frequently sent letters to his family. He had to re-learn how to read and write, and in order to learn as many words and their definitions as he could, he often read the dictionary from cover to cover. Malcom adored words.

During this time of self-discovery, Reginald, Malcolm's brother, would stop over and talk about his new conversion to Islam. Malcolm would shortly after join the Nation of Islam, a group of which Reginald was a member.

In essence, Malcom just need solitude, a desk, a dictionary, a completely stocked library, and a pen and paper in order to teach himself everything he wanted to learn.

But in the end, What motivated Malcolm X to educate himself?

When Malcom X saw how his intelligent buddy Bimbi could dominate any argument, he was inspired to further his education. He understood that it was due to his reading habits. Malcom had some jealousy toward Bimbi. He would attempt to act like Bambi in the jail, but he could never keep up. His inability to communicate effectively was another factor in his motivation. He had trouble getting his point through and being taken seriously. He had no way of expressing himself when he started writing letters to Elijah Muhammad. He also frequently struggled to comprehend the texts he attempted to read due to a lack of language. This inspired him to start memorizing terms and mimic the dictionary. The need to express himself and understand along with being understood is what motivated Malcom X to educate himself.

Thanks,

Eddie
