Hello from MrBillDoesMath!

Answer: y = -4x - 9

Discussion: The equation of a non-vertical line is given by y = mx + b. The line parallel to y = -4x +5 has the same slope, so m = -4. That means the parallel line looks like this:

y = -4x + b

As the parallel line passes through (-2, -1), via substitution,.

-1 = -4 (-2) + b or

-1 = 8 + b.

Subtract 8 from each side:

-1 -8 = b

or

b = -9

Thank you,

MrB
