An amino acid is a single molecule and known as monomer. A protein is a polymer that consists of a number of monomers of amino acids. Amino acids (monomers) are the structural units that make up proteins. Amino acids join together to form short polymer chains called as peptides. These two or more long peptides join together to form polypeptides or known as proteins.

Structure of an amino acid:-An amino acid has a central carbon atom surrounded by a hydrogen atom, a carboxyl group (-COOH) , an amino group(-NH2) and an alkyl group(-R). (refer the image given in the question)
