You could also use a ruler or some other measuring device for (2). You can also draw a picture of a circle with the denominator as the slices, and the numerator as the shaded areas, then compare both fractions together for (3).

Answer :

The three ways to show that 7/8 is greater than 5/6 are:

(1) Same denominator method

Multiply top and bottom of each fraction by the denominator of the other.

(7)/(8) and
(5)/(6)

To make the same denominator we will multiply top and bottom of each fraction by the denominator of the other.

(7* 6)/(8* 6) and
(5* 8)/(6* 8)

(42)/(48) and
(40)/(48)

That means, in the same denominator, more numerator value will be greater than the other.

(42)/(48) >
(40)/(48)

(7)/(8) >
(5)/(6)

(2) Same numerator method

Multiply top and bottom of each fraction by the numerator of the other.

(7)/(8) and
(5)/(6)

To make the same numerator we will multiply top and bottom of each fraction by the numerator of the other.

(7* 5)/(8* 5) and
(5* 7)/(6* 7)

(35)/(40) and
(35)/(42)

That means, in the same numerator, less denominator value will be greater than the other.

(35)/(40) >
(35)/(42)

(7)/(8) >
(5)/(6)

(3) In decimal form

(7)/(8)=0.875

and

(5)/(6)=0.833

Thus,
(7)/(8) >
(5)/(6)
