The heredity principle was given by Gregor Mendel in 1860. One of these principles called as Mendel's first law of segregation.

The law of segregation states that allele pairs segregate or separate from each other at the time of gamete formation and unite at the time of fertilization. The allelic pair segregates from each other so that offspring could acquire one factor from each parent.

According to the law of segregation, alleles ( different forms of a gene that correspond to particular trait) are separated from one another during the process of gamete formation. This results in each gamete having single allele for a particular trait and thus it is also called law of purity of gametes.

Thus, by separation of alleles independent of one another it can be concluded that traits are passed from parents to their offspring independent of one another.
