Explanation: France and Britain were longtime rivals, and so, looking to get back at Britain for the 7 Years War (French and Indian War) they joined the war in support of the United States.

This has nothing to do with your question, but interestingly, Morocco was one of the first countries to recognize the United States in its bid for independence.
