NATO wanted the USSR to know that an attack on one of them was an attack on all of them.
NATO allowed the weaker countries to stand behind the firepower of the U.S.
The Soviets and their satellites wanted to show the West they were a powerful alliance.
Any attempt to spread communism to new countries would be opposed by the United States throughout the world.

NATO was formed by Canada, the US, and Western Europe to protect eachother as allies from the Soviet Union
