Customers of a phone company can choose between two service plans for long distance calls. The first plan has no monthly fee but charges $0.14 for each minute of calls. The second plan has a $23 monthly fee and charges an additional $0.09 for each minute of calls. For how many minutes of calls will the costs of the two plans be equal?

460 minutes

Explanation:

plan 1 : .14 m

plan 2: 23 + .09m

set them equal

.14m = 23 + .09m

subtract .09m from each side

.14m-.09m = 23 + .09m-.09m

.05m = 23

divide by .05 on each side

m = 23/.05

m = 460 minutes
