The aim of the Muller v. State of Oregon case was to improve the working conditions for women. The government ended up passing a law that protected them from being exploited by setting a limit of 10 hours of work per day for women.
This made sense at the time and did in fact represent a win for women reformers, but the "protection" granted to them would ultimately represent a limitation to their economic growth. In addition, these "protective" laws pushed a reinforcement of gender stereotypes that later would set women back in their fight for equal rights.
