Answer:

x = 28 degrees and y = 47 degrees

Explanation:

The angles marked 40 degrees and 5x degrees sum to 180 ( adjacent angles), so:-

5x + 40 = 180

5x = 140

x = 28 degrees

The angles 5x and 3y -1 are exterior alternate angles so are equal in measure:-

5x = 3y - 1

140 = 3y - 1

3y = 141

y = 47 degrees
