In the short story "The Necklace," by Guy de Maupassant, one of the themes is the desire of wealth. Mathilde Loisel is discontented with her not very affluent lifestyle, and believes that money, possessions and going to rich people's parties will make her happier. Her obsession for fortune makes her lose reality: her husband spends a lot of money in a new dress, and then they must work toughly for years to replace the necklace, which turns out to be fake.
