Answer: Choice C (lower left corner)

==================================================

Step-by-step explanation:

"one and a half" can be represented by 1.5 because 0.5 = 1/2, so this means that we have 1.5 times
√(x) leading to the function
S(x) = 1.5√(x)

At this point, we have a choice between B and C based on the function we just found. However, we can rule out choice B because the point (0,0) is not on the function curve. Note how plugging in x = 0 leads to

y = 1.5*sqrt(x)

y = 1.5*sqrt(0)

y = 1.5*0

y = 0

So this proves how (x,y) = (0,0) is one point on the function curve. Only choice C fits the description.

The question is not "Which one is correct?" The question is" Why isn't there more than 1 answer."

B

B says the graph is S(x) = 1.5*sqrt(L)

(0,0) should be one of the points. Also for x = 4 for the length

sqrt(4) = 2. 2 * 1.5 = 3. That means something with a sail on it that is 4 feet in length. B doesn't give 3 as the answer for a 4 foot long boat.

What does C give for x = 4? It gives 3 just as it should. The answer is C

Answer C.
