The highest clouds in the atmosphere are cirrocumulus, cirrus, and cirrostratus. Cumulonimbus clouds can also grow to be very high.

Mid-level clouds include altocumulus and altostratus.

The lowest clouds in the atmosphere are stratus, cumulus, and stratocumulus.

Characteristics

  • The type of clouds are recognized based on the shape and height in the sky. There are low level clods, mid-level clouds and high-level clouds.
  • Cumulus are puffy clouds(below 6000 feet) that are scattered in the sky.
  • Stratus are near the ground ( above 6000 feet and below 20000 feet) that forms fog.
  • Cirrus (above 18000 feet) are thin wispy clouds.
  • Nimbus and cumulonimbus clouds are seen during rain or thunderstorm usually up to 50000 feet.
