At summer camp the ratio of boys to girls is 5:4. If there are 40 boys, how many girls are there

First set up the fractions to compare.

5/4 = 40/x , with x being the number of girls when there are 40 boys

5x = 4*40 = 160 (cross multiplication)

x = 160/5 = 32 (simple algebra simplification)

There are 32 girls.
