This is a quadratic that you can factor on sight. It can be written as

x^2 - 5x - 6 = 0

The only 2 sets of factors that you should try are 2 and 3 and 6 and 1 and in this case the answer is likely 6 and 1. The reason is that you need to get the factors adding to - 5 and that 6 is a minus.

You can eliminate 3 and 2 by noting that they much give - 6 when multiplied. That means they have different signs. The middle term has to be either - 1 or plus 1 to get 6 to be minus.

So the two answers must be -6 and 1 inside the 2 binomial brackets.

(x - 6)(x + 1) = 0

So the solution set is

x - 6 = 0

x = 6 And the point is (6,0) where the crosses the x axis.

(x + 1) = 0

x = - 1 And the point is (-1,0) where the graph crosses the x axis.
