Step-by-step explanation:

“Will father be back from work early today?” Jane looked up and enquired from her mother while cutting some vegetables. “I think so …,” “Ouch! My finger!” Jane yelled out frantically as her face twisted into a grimace of pain.

Seeing crimson red blood oozing out from the cut in Jane’s finger, her mother was initially immobilised with fear and her face turned ashen and her legs jelly-like. Regaining her composure moments later, Jane’s mother ran helter-skelter to get a bandage from her bedroom. She left the wok unattended. As she applied antiseptic onto the wound, she was glad to see Jane smiling broadly once again. Seeing her smile put her at ease.

At that juncture, a burning smell flooded their nostrils. One whiff of the smoky air and Jane’s mother immediately jolted up in stark realisation. “Oh no, the work that I was frying the vegetables must have caught fire!” she screamed out, her eyes wide open with horror.

Without a moment to spare, both Jane and her mother took to their heels as swift as the wind towards the smoke filled kitchen. The sight in the kitchen caused them both to stand at the kitchen’s entrance like two statues, their mouths agape. The wok was engulfed in angry flames. Tongues of orange flames lashed out from the wok, sprinkling bright red sparks about. Instinctively, Jane’s mother got a big, wet white bath towel and threw it over the flames. Although the fire in the wok had been extinguished, the wok had been burnt beyond recognition. Jane’s eyes were teary from shock but nevertheless, a wave of relief slowly swept over Jane, seeing that the fire had been brought under control. Jane’s mother put her reassuring hand on Jane’s shoulder and consoled her. “Don’t be sad, at least we came through the fire unscathed.” Jane could not agree more and nodded her head in agreement.

Undoubtedly a nightmarish ordeal for Jane, this fire incident would be etched forever in the minds of the mother and daughter. Jane affirmed silently to herself that she would pay more attention to tasks she would be doing in the near future.
