An individual's ability to handle their given roles in society is called their __________ age, and it may be a better indicator of that person's readiness to retire from work then chronological age.

Functional age.

Functional age is the idea that perhaps a "with it" 80 year old might be still able to work while some 55-year olds might not. Simply looking at both candidates through the lens of chronological age would not account for the differences in functional ability.
