How did the Sumatra-Andaman earthquake cause so much damage if it occurred in the middle of the Indian Ocean?

Because a earthquake creates a forceful wave that spirals the water out of control which is called a Tsunami .

it wasn't just the earthquake that did damage. the magnitude of the quake caused a tsunami to form which hit shore and caused the more catastrophic damage.
