These equations are NOT equivalent. If you simplify 4(5a-8)+2a, you get 22a-32.
Steps:
4(5a-8)+2a: Multiply 4 by 5a to get 20a, and multiply 4 by -8 to get -32.
20a-32+2a: add 20a and 2a.
the final simplified equation is 22a-32.
Hope this helps!!
