use the formula for gravitational potential energy,
e_(p \: = \: )mgh

17.1 J = m × 9.8 × 2.3 m
17.1 J = 22.54m

m = 17.1 J ÷ 22.54
m = 0.7586512866 kg
m = 0.759 kg
