x^ 2 + 6x + 2x + 12 = 0 given

x^2 + 8x + 12 = 0 combine like terms

(x + 6)(x + 2) = 0 distributive postulate

x + 6 = 0 or x + 2 = 0 Zero product postulate

x = -6 or x = -2 Subtraction property of equality
