Remark

In order for the figure to be a parallelogram, the 2 parts of the same diagonal must be equal.

Equation

Therefore 79 - y = 2y + 22 Add y to both sides.

Solution

79 = 2y + y + 22 Combine

79 = 3y + 22 Subtract 22 from both sides

79 - 22 = 3y Combine like terms

57 = 3y Divide by 3 on both sides

57/3 = y Divide

19 = y

Answer y must be 19

Edit

For x you would have to obey the same principle.

3x + 1 = x + 27 Subtract x from both sides

3x - x + 1= 27 Combine like terms

2x + 1 = 27 Subtract 1 from both sides

2x= 27 - 1 Combine the right

2x = 26 Divide by 2 on both sides.

2x/2 = 26/2

x = 13
