Although being portrayed as 'romantic' couple throughout the story and even implying that he has importuned her with his love as a way to play with her mind and control her and her actions in a subtle way, during the performance of the play he completely ignores her, as if she was not even there.

This enrages Ofelia but not nearly as much as when she found out her lover had killed her father.
