So, holes in the earth let magma escape. When this lava cools, it makes igneous rock. These are pure and have no fossil deposits and can appear either glassy or coarse. When pieces of these rocks are weathered down (eroded), they settle into a basin where they are compacted and cemented. These are our sedimentary rocks. These guys might have structure features like mud or fossil tracks, ripple marks, or bedding. Now, when these basins get buried, the pressure and heat of getting pushed down toward Earth's core transform these rocks again into metamorphic rocks. These types of rocks are usually crystalline and often have a foliated or 'banded' texture.
