Thomas a Becket was a good and loyal friend to King Henry. As such, by appointing him Archbishop of Canterbury, Henry was hoping to reestablish royal supremacy over the Church in England.

Upon becoming Archbishop, Becket started taking religion seriously (which he had not done before) and the whole plan backfired on Henry.
