What are some of the similarities between the Hausa city-states and other city-states you have read about?

  • Hausa city-states and other city-states are similar in a few ways. All the city-states all depended on farming and trade to thrive as a city-state. The city-states also both have a similar form of government. Hausa has ministers and officials to check the power. But Athens for example, was a democracy. This meant that the ruler of the city-states would not have a lot of power over the city-states.

What are some of the similarities between Sundiata and Mansa Musa?

  • Sundiata and Mansa Musa are alike in many ways. Both are skilled military leaders who excessed royal control over the gold-salt trade. Both Sundiata and Mansa Musa were very liked rulers. They were able to put down any rebellion.

What do you think was the most effective method Ghana used to regulate its economy?

  • Ghana's king had controlled trade and commanded a large army, he could demand taxes and gifts from the chiefs of surrounding lands. If the chiefs had made their payments then the king left them alone. The king had nuggets of gold and much salt though they were collected as taxes.
