Answer:

"Expanded form" is use for that purpose

Explanation:

There are several varieties of expanded form. Which one is of interest may depend on what you want to show about the way numbers are constructed. Here are three examples:

A) 1234.56 = 1000 + 200 + 30 + 4 + .5 + .06

B) 1234.56 = 1×1000 + 2×100 + 3×10 + 4×1 + 5×0.1 + 6×0.01

C) 1234.56 = 1×10³ + 2×10² + 3×10¹ + 4×10⁰ + 5×10⁻¹ + 6×10⁻²

___

A) Shows the value of each digit. The digit 3 has a value of 30, for example. It shows that the value of a digit can be found by considering all the other digits to be zero.

B) Shows the place-value multiplier of each digit. The digit 3 is in the tens place, so has a value that is 3 times 10.

C) Also shows the place-value multiplier of each digit, but shows it in a more general way. This form illustrates how a place-value number system is constructed for base 10 and for any number base. If 10 were replaced by 8, you suddenly have a base-8 number, along with a means to determine its value. This form also can help you understand scientific notation.
