Given:

  • Computer equipment was purchased for $2140
  • Discount series of 5%, 12% and 10% is given

To Find: The net cost after the series of discounts.

Solution:

The total net cost will be $1610.096 (can be approximated to $1610)

Calculation:

In a discount series, the discounts are applied successively. That is, the second disount will be calculated on the first discounted price. The third discount applied to the second discounted price etc.

In this case, 5% has been applied to $2140.

So 5% of 2140 is
(5)/(100).2140= 107

Therefore, the cost after the first discount will be $2140-107 = $2033

Next, 12% will be applied to $2033

So 12% of 2033 is
(12)/(100).2033= 243.96

Therefore the cost after the second discount is $2033-243.96 = $1789.04

Finally, 10% will be applied to $1789.04

So 10% of 1789.04 is
(10)/(100).1789.04= 178.904

Therefore the cost after the third and final discount is $1789.04-178.904 = $1610.096

So, the total net cost will be $1610.096
