The answer is the British navy repeatedly seized american merchant ships and impressed the crews into serving in the Royal Navy. By the end of the war the treaty of Ghent restored the borders of lost territiory on each side. As if the war never took place. Intresting the treaty did not cover American seafaring rights but as war wound down in Europe the British navy stopped seizing American ships as the need was no longer necissary.
