So, I said that the variable x stands for the amount of votes for Ms. Boulton. It says that Ms. Johnson received 50 more votes than she did, so if you take away that extra 50, they should both have the same number of votes. So our candidates could be represented by:

Ms. Johnson
= x + 50

Ms. Boutlton
= x

So our equation would be:
x + x + 50 = 206

Combine like terms:
2x + 50 = 206

Isolate the variable:
2x + (50 - 50) = (206 - 50)

Simplify.
2x = 156

Once more isolate the variable:
(2x)/(2) = (156)/(2)

--> x = 78

So if Mrs. Boulton received x votes, then that means she received 78 votes, and If Ms. Johnson received x + 50 votes, that means she received 128 votes. If you add 78 and 128, that gives you a sum of 206, so you know this answer is correct.

x=Ms. Bulton's votes

50+x= Ms. Johnson's votes

206= total votes

so add ms. bulton and ms. johnson's votes together

x+(50+x)=206 find like terms and add them

2x+50=206 now subt. 50 from both sides

2x=206-50

2x=156 now divide by 2

x=78, which is Ms. Bultons votes and that leaves

50+78=128 for Ms. Johnson's votes
