An ionic compound is made of ionic bonds that are formed by transfer of electrons from one atom to the other. The atom that loses its electron forms the positive ion (cation) and that which gains electron forms the negative ion (anion).

Some examples are:

1) Lithium Chloride : LiCl i.e. Li⁺Cl⁻

2) Sodium Chloride: NaCl i.e. Na⁺Cl⁻

3) Magnesium oxide: MgO i.e. Mg²⁺O²⁻

4) Potassium Bromide: KBr i.e. K⁺Br⁻
