Thomas Jefferson knew that if France continued to be “the owner” of Louisiana, it might happen that in the future, France would close the Mississippi to American use. Jefferson was afraid for the country’s trade and even peace. After Juan Ventura Morales from Spain ended the American right to deposit cargo in the river, Jefferson noticed that his fears were right.
Because of that, the Louisiana purchase was a victory for the US to assure trade and peace. It also made possible for America to explore the land, later it was discovered that the territory contained rich mineral sources, forests, wildlife resources, and productive soil.
