The burning of methane is a chemical reaction.

When methane burns in the presence of oxygen, carbon dioxide and water are generated. When new substances are produced, a chemical reaction has occurred.

the equation is CH4 + O2 --> H20 + CO2.

im pretty sure it absorbs the heat.
