Tom has just received a new job offer he is told his starting salary will be at 75000 per year he is also told that his salary will be probably be 83000 in the next 4 years

Let x be the number of years and y be the salary

his starting salary will be at 75000 per year

so when x=0 , y = 75000

In 4 years, the salary will be 83000

so when x = 4 , y = 83000

We got two points (0,75000) and (4,83000)

Now we find slope and frame equation

The formula for slope using two points

(y_2-y_1)/(x_2-x_1)

Replace all the values and find out slope

(83000-75000))/(4-0)

(8000)/(4)= 2000

So slope = 2000

Now we use point slope formula

y - y_1 = m (x-x_1)

We use slope m = 2000 and (0,75000)

y - 75000= 2000(x-0)

Add 75000 on both sides

y = 2000x + 75000

Required linear equation is y = 2000x + 75000
