First, notice that he is placing 3 markers which means that he will be dividing the race into 3 parts. Thus, we can just divide the total distance of the race by 3 to find the distance to find the distance between each marker.

Let's do this:

(4 (1)/(2))/(3)

(4 + (1)/(2))/(3)

(4)/(3) + ((1)/(2))/(3)

(4)/(3) + (1)/(6)

(8 + 1)/(6)

(9)/(6) = (3 \cdot 3)/(3 \cdot 2) = (3)/(2)

Our answer is 3/2, or Choice B.

You have to divide 4 1/2 by 3.
Convert 4 1/2 to decimal: 4.5
4.5/3=1.5
1.5 to fraction: 3/2
B is the answer
