The Pythagorean Theorem is a² + b² = c², where a and b are the two shorter sides, and c is the hypotenuse, or the longest side.

For this triangle, a and b could be either 8 and 6, so let's just make a=6 and b=8. Now a=6 because we are applying the theorem to one half of the triangle, so we have to split the bottom length in half. Then c will be side x, because that is the longest side, i.e. the hypotenuse.

a² + b² = c²

6² + 8² = c²

36 + 64 = c²

100 = c²

√(100) =
\sqrt{c^(2)}

10 = c

c = x

x = 10

The value of x is 10

Hope that helps!

The Pythagorean theorem is a² + b² = c²

c is your hypotenuse which is x

a and b are the other sides of the triangle

If b = 8, a is one half of 12 which is 6

6² + 8² = x²

36 + 64 = x²

100 = x²

10 = x

The answer is D, x = 10
